dayton wedding chalkboard artist: suzy

If you don’t mind, I’d love to introduce to my dear friend Suzy. She creates the most beautiful hand-lettered chalkboards for weddings & events, inspired by vintage typography (including the one she created for our first Craft Dayton event). Wouldn’t one of her pieces be beautiful as a wedding welcome, menu or place card board, or a photobooth backdrop, especially if the wedding was at all vintage-y? Here are a few more examples of her gorgeous work:

Be sure to check out her website and blog and, if you’re planning a wedding, party or event, you should probably hire her (um, especially if I’m going to be there because, gosh, these are just so beautiful to photograph)!

(Top gif & photos by me, other photos via Suzy’s website).

dayton engagement: morgan & brian

Morgan and Brian met at the University of Dayton (you know I just love shooting fellow Flyers!), fell in love doing service work in Appalachia, and are an incredibly sweet, genuine couple, with such an effervescent love. I got a little nervous when the skies opened up right as Emily began doing Morgan’s makeup before their engagement photos–with Brian working out of state this summer, rescheduling wasn’t going to be an option–but Morgan was just so calm. “It’ll work out,” she said, “I prayed all week that it would.” We drove to our location with the wipers on the highest setting and, I’ll admit, I was starting to panic. But, Morgan was absolutely right–we arrived, the rain disappeared (except for the perfect little drizzle that makes an appearance above), everything couldn’t have worked out more beautifully, and we were able to create some just gorgeous images (don’t you agree?).

One of the best parts about photographing weddings is seeing how days that, on the surface, tend to be made up of similar elements & traditions end up reflecting the couple being married. Sometimes the whole day is quiet, contemplative, spiritual. Sometimes they are full of heart-in-the-throat emotion and uncontrollable happy tears. And sometimes, like at West & Leah’s wedding at the Temple Theater in Saginaw, MI, it is so full of so much joy and laughter and jokes between good friends that it would be impossible to get the silly smile off your face, even if you wanted to. (West & Zack actually knew each other in high school, and we were so lucky to run into them one day and reconnect not too long after their engagement.) Leah & West, we were so grateful to be the ones to capture your wedding photos, and to be a part of your (crazy fun!) wedding day. SO much love (and congratulations!!) in our hearts for you two!

dayton senior portraits: james

I have a bit of a soft spot in my heart for photographing senior boys. While I’ll always enjoy photographing senior girls (the outfits! poses! hair and makeup!), the boys don’t seem to get as much attention, though this is just as an important part of their lives. Maybe they aren’t quite at ease in front of the camera, or maybe they think photos are just something that they have to get through “for mom,” :) but then, it that just makes it that much more exciting when they come in to view their photos and actually like how they look. I was so grateful for the opportunity to photograph James, especially. He was one of my photography students this last year, and was such a privilege to watch him produce some fantastic photography throughout the school year.
