travel: detroit

In the week before the accident, Zack & I found ourselves with a few days off, and decided to take a quick trip to Detroit. A few people looked at us like we were crazy when we mentioned Detroit as a get-away destination, but I’ve recently seen so many things about it pop up online that made it seem so fascinating (particularly this post), and we’d already gone almost everywhere within a “short drive’s” distance in every other direction, so off we went! Armed with Design*Sponge’s city guide and recommendations from a dear friend, I was so excited to explore the city–and we were lucky to find out that Joe, our AirBnB host, was a city tour guide! He and his partner Mike couldn’t have been more welcoming or friendly, and totally epitomized the spirit that we felt all around the city, of people who, collectively, have decided to roll up their sleeves and make things better, and who take such pride in their hometown–and we saw so much to be proud of (links & info at the bottom).

Photos from: The Michigan Building, which once held the Michigan Theater, and has now been converted into a parking garage; the lighthouse & conservatory on Belle Isle; The Packard Plant, which we did get a bit closer to, but chose not to stop for too many photos, as there was a bit of…police activity going on nearby; the incredible Heidelberg ProjectDetroit Institute of Art, and the John Stephens Coppin mural inside the beautiful library; the Guardian Building; some of the wonderful places we ate & drank, including the gorgeous Cliff Bell’s, Brooklyn Street LocalAvalon International Breads, Mercury Bar, where I had one of the best burger’s I’ve ever had, and we couldn’t resist trying a coney at Lafayette Coney Island  (not pictured: the Grand Trunk Pub, which had great food, and only serves Michigan beer).

black eyes, a broken arm & thank-yous

On Saturday, on the way to Taylor & Stephen’s wedding–that I had been so, especially looking forward to–I was involved in a serious car accident. Something like this happening, on the morning of a wedding was, quite literally, my worst nightmare. But my dear, dear Zack couldn’t have been more perfect–he called on a couple dear photographer friends to photograph the wedding, and got them all the information and equipment they needed even before I had even made it to the ER.

A broken arm (that needed surgery), two banged-up knees, and a pretty hefty concussion but, otherwise, I’m so grateful to be doing alright (and feeling better every day). I couldn’t be more thankful for all the flowers, notes & cards, the thoughts, calls and visits, and, most especially, for my clients who’ve been so patient and understanding. I’m feeling more like myself every day (even faster than I could’ve imagined), and am looking forward to getting back to appointments and sessions in the next couple weeks. And I’m certainly still accessible by email and phone, if you need anything at all!

These things always give pause for thought–hug your loved ones this weekend, won’t you? And thank you, again, and so much, for all your patience & prayers.

dayton wedding: sarah & michael

At the end of the night, when we were getting ready to leave the Willow Tree, I told Sarah that her & Michael’s (who you may remember from their engagement session) wedding had been, “like, the inside of my soul.” Which, is, admittedly, probably a bit dramatic. But! A beautiful, meaningful ceremony (in UD’s gorgeous chapel, no less), with one of the funniest, most heart-felt wedding homilies we’ve ever heard; a super fun, totally chill bridal party; a stunning BHLDN dress; a barn decorated with sparkly, gold table numbers and vintage jars & bottles full of flowers; AND a seriously epic mix of ’90s dance hits? What more could a photographer ask for? :) Thank you, Sarah & Michael, so, so much, for having us along through your beautiful day.

You can now view images & order prints through Sarah & Michael’s online gallery, by clicking here.

styled shoot: river’s edge estate

My uber-creative friend Bley and I put together this shoot at the end of February, to show off a newly-opened wedding venue, the River’s Edge Estate in Franklin. This was the first time I’ve worked on a styled shoot, and it is was so fun to get to play wedding planner. We envisioned something vintage-inspired, with a collected feel–really, once we found that amazing vintage wedding dress in a thrift shop, all the colors and styles seemed to spin out almost on their own. We couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out! AND we were so thrilled that Engaged and Inspired featured our photos this week. Be sure to hop on over to Engaged and Inspired to view more, and to check out all the amazing vendors that brought everything together so beautifully:

dayton senior photographer: meredith

You may remember Meredith from her wintery senior portraits, and now it is time for spring! We hopped on over to Wegerzyn not too long after I shot those film images from my last post, and isn’t it remarkable how, it can be wintery, cold, and bare then, seemingly overnight, everything just pops up and blooms?
