film, personal work: square

My very first (ever) roll of medium-format film, shot on my Yashica-D, Fuji Pro 400H (or, for those who aren’t camera nerds–big, old camera that shoots big, square negatives). I got this camera as a birthday present to myself when I found it in an antique shop, and had no idea if it worked. This roll was basically just a test, but I’m so, so excited to shoot with it some more.

Two frames from the Dayton Celtic Festival (I took more the next day, which I should have back next week), and two from a little birthday get-together last weekend:

Have a great weekend!

film: 3d disposable camera

At a thrift store last week, I came across this guy. He was .79, had expired in 1999, and the battery for his flash was way dead, but brand new. I was pretty ridiculously excited–I mean, 3d photos! .79!

The camera takes three shots with each of the three little lenses (which is why it only takes 16 images per roll–it is really 3 of each). I had it processed at a local lab before I even realized that there were special labs that would process and make lenticular prints from these 3d cameras. Not that it would have mattered–the lab I found online can’t do them anymore, anyway. But, you can animate them yourself (thanks, technology!). Only a few of my shots from this way-expired camera turned out, but I was able to animate one of my friend Alicia (at the 2nd Street Market here in Dayton). The three individual shots:

And, animated:

There are some really cool ones on Flickr, too. Supposedly there are a couple of these cameras for sale on Amazon, but who knows–they must be super old. Anyway, I just love playing around with different kinds of goofy cameras. Happy Wednesday!

  • Hello, I have two of these cameras NEW in their original box, and sealed silvered plastic envelope.
Inside the box, there are instructions to send to a LAB which unfortunately no longer exists, to get 3d lenticular PRINTS.
I have some of those prints from an older camera roll, but I wonder if I could find a new lab that could make those prints.
    Do you have any idea?

    • Hi Ernesto! Actually, you should be able to take the film to any lab to have it developed, then you’ll just have to get the film scanned and play around with the digital files. They will be three different “frames” per shot, so you might need to find somewhere that can play around with the scanning a bit. I’d recommend stacking them into a GIF, like I did, but you also could just layer them in Photoshop then get prints made from the final images. I used a local lab called MotoPhoto–if you’re willing to mail it out, they probably remember doing them for me and could help you out. Good luck! :)ReplyCancel

instagrams

Instagrams! From Cleveland (Lake Erie!), where I couldn’t resist trying Melt. Oddly enough, it was recommended to me by a friend then, as I drove into Cleveland and found their NPR station, they were doing a story on the restaurant and it’s owner! I took it as a sign, and my grilled cheese did not disappoint. Made a quick pit-stop in Columbus on the way back from Cleveland to visit my sister, where we got Jeni’s ice cream (which–you’ve had, right? If not, you must. It is simply the best ever!). We also stopped in Wholly Craft, where the plethora of Ohio-themed art & goodies was just almost too much for me to handle, and where I got Zack this ridiculously wonderful ferret art print.

Also, Wednesday was my birthday! My wonderful man got me this lovely set of vintage drinking glasses (something I’ve been eying for quite sometime!). The last photo is me, circa 199…5? 6? My grandpa brought lots of old photos to our family birthday dinner. Yeah, I totally rocked the bright pink/lime green glasses and braided pigtails.

Tonight, we’ll be watching the Olympic opening ceremony with some friends. I have to admit, I’m a little geekily excited to watch them this summer.  Are you into the Olympics, and will you be watching? Whatever your plans, have a happy weekend!

cleveland wedding photographer: jenny & michael

I was honored to travel to Cleveland last weekend to photograph Jenny & Michael’s beautiful wedding. They were married at the gorgeous St. Christopher’s, and we were able to stop by a beautiful park to get some photos with a little bit of Lake Erie before their reception at Brennan’s. I met Jenny when I photographed her sister Michelle’s wedding last year, and was so grateful to get to spend another day with such a warm, welcoming group of family and friends. Throughout the whole day, in fact, it was so apparent how full of joy  both of their families and friends were for them, and how surrounded they are with love and support. Jenny & Michael, congratulations, and thank you again for choosing me to document your wedding day!
